Museum of Nature

This tree is on the grounds of the Museum of Nature in Ottawa. I lived close by and this is one of the very first drawings that I made, and it made me feel like I was onto something. The tree is still there, 25 years later – it is struggling and being cared for. I walk past every time I’m in the area just to say hello to my old beautiful friend.

It took me years to realize that I should name this tree after the museum. Every tree is really a museum of nature, filled with life.

Dream of the Blue Roses

I just loved the orange stems shooting out of the old stump, and the contrast in colour between the two. The orange is so vibrant and I loved that this was the natural colour. I assume from the size of the stem that this would eventually become a tree, but maybe it’s a bush? I like not knowing.

POWER LINES

I am a fan of city trees, where we can easily stand back and see their individuality, and see how they have adapted to the urban environment. I have so much affection for these trees that make our urban environments so much more habitable.

Two Birches

I honestly do not remember where I found these trees. I do remember deciding to add the fence. It’s possible that I found the photo in a magazine, or that it was from my own memorized understanding of the shapes of trees, and that I made them up. What I do know is that I find this piece particularly calming for me.

Park Tree

This is a tree from a park near to where I used to live in downtown Ottawa. In the middle, you can see a tag sticking out from the bark. I really like the bark on this one.
